The Return of Possum Blogging

Late Monday evening, around 11:15pm, I was stepping out onto my back porch to smoke a cigar and continue reading Tom Clancy's The Sum of All Fears (I'm about halfway through) when I saw a sight I hadn't seen since last year: a possum eating out of my cat's dish. I quickly ran upstairs, grabbed my camera, and then snapped this photo:

A few minutes after I took that picture, the possum scurried away:

Those readers who were around when I was a contributor at The Festering Swamp will remember my possum blogging series of posts from the summer of 2007, when a couple of baby possums kept showing up to steal cat food. I suppose this is one of those, now all grown up. But I can't be sure.

In other news, Christopher Hitchens yesterday posted an article in which he - like many other elitists of the left and right - denounced Governor Sarah Palin. I was instantly reminded of this verse from American Senryu, written by James Day Hodgson, a former U.S. Ambassador to Japan:

The capacity
To gain the right enemies
Is part of genius.

That is yet another reason why Governor Palin will someday make a fine president.
